CHAIRMAN’S TROPHY GOLF TOURNAMENT RALLY

Dalston Hall Caravan Park, 23rd to 26th September

The last time we were at Dalston it was raining so to speed up pitching I decided to drive straight on to the pitch over the grass. Two minutes later with 4x4 and caravan stuck up to the axles in mud it didn’t seem like such a good idea but Paul and his boys were quickly on hand to release us from the mire and safely on to our pitch. Two years on and with a much improved site Paul and family were equally as helpful and friendly as were the Marshalls and Cumbria Centre members.

Arriving on the Friday we were soon sited and plugged in, then later it was over to the Marshalls for a pot of tea, a slice or two of millionaires shortbread, and a brief resume of the weekends activities. Derek had brought a cake presented to him on the occasion of his 100th visit to his favourite CL near Perth so we all enjoyed a slice of that too.

Daybreak on Saturday saw 9 hardy souls taking on the golf course for the Chairman’s Trophy. Golf is a game where you hit a little white ball as far as you can and then waste time stomping around in long wet grass trying to find it again and soaking trousers and socks into the bargain. There weren’t too many trees on the course but I found so many of them I should have worn a checked shirt and carried a chainsaw, but congratulations to Fred on a well deserved victory. Macca  had the best idea, he took a flight in a 2 seater aircraft over the site while we all waved like idiots as if he could see us.  Saturday evening saw us in the clubhouse for a meal [excellent food courtesy of Paul and Co] and a quiz about Cumbria. Gill and I are from Northumberland and we were craftily seated with a couple from Essex so no chance there.

Sunday was another lovely morning with flag, coffee, prize giving, thanks and van prizes.

So to sum up the weekend, lost in the golf, lost in the quiz, lost in the competition, lost the freeview from the TV, lost three golf balls and lost in the van prizes by picking the one with the black spot.

We were impressed with the warm welcome we received and the camaraderie during our weekend, we may have arrived as strangers but we certainly left as friends.

Congratulations to George and Kath, Macca and Sheila for an excellent rally and a very enjoyable time.
